An
Unusual Treat at the Raj
|
Well known
for his talents as a restauranteur,hotelier and Asian Chef par
excellence, Tommy Miah of the famous Raj Restaurant in Leith,
Edinburgh has turned his attention to the the music of his homeland, Bangladesh.
To this end he
has invited his close friend Shahriar and Baul Shafi Mondol and the
Group to the Raj for three weeks of this year's Edinburgh Festival,
from 7th to 26th.August,an outstanding group of Bengali Folk Musicians.

The Baul
People were-and are-mystic minstrels living in rural Bangladesh and
the West Bengal Region of India, and came to prominence in the
nineteenth century, influencing the ideas and works of the great
Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore.The Bauls belong to an unorthodox
devotional tradition influenced by a mixture of Hinduism, Budhism,
Bengali Vasinavism and Sufi Islam, their poetry and music being
devoted to the endeavour of finding man's true relationship with God.
The Group
consists of 5 musicians, Mondol, Shahriar, Mukul, Bishu and Tofikul,
For those with
an ear for traditional music of any origin, this Bangladeshi group is
an absolute must, and we welcome them to Edinburgh with the greatest
pleasure and anticipation.
