The Maharaja in London Road, Benfleet, recieved the BCA Caterer of the Year South East, at the Bangladesh Catering Association Awards 2009, on Monday 6th of December 2009 at River Park Plaza Hotel, London.

Beating over 12000 competitors according to organisers, the Maharaja was selected as BCA Caterer of the Year South East 2009, at the 49th anniversary of the Bangladesh Catering Association Awards, which aims to honour businessmen who have helped the curry industry flourish into an industry that pours £3.2 billion a year into the UK economy. The Maharaja was voted as one of the Top Ten Indian Restaurants in the South East and in the Top 100 in the UK, at the British Curry Awards 2009 and 2008, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald and Chris Tarrant. The Award winning restaurant was also chosen by MPs as second runner up at the Tiffin Cup Parliamentary Restaurant Awards, hosted by Keith Vaz MP.

Officially supported by Her Majesty The Queen, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, leader of the opposition Rt Hon David Cameron MP, and Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the awards highlighted the skills shortage currently affecting the much loved curry houses, and the effect of the raging recession, which has seen a reduction in sales of over 15 per cent in the globally acclaimed curry industry.

The Maharaja was selected for its cuisine, service and innovation, notable attendees included Lord Karan Bilimoria, Founder of Cobra Beer, Pat Chapman, Editor of The Good Curry Guide and Founder of The Curry Club, and the Bangladesh High Commissioner Dr M Sayeedur Rahman Khan. The glittering award night was attended by more than 1,000 restaurateurs, MPs, diplomats and celebrity guests.

Siraj Ali, CEO of The Maharaja said "It is an honour to once again be recognised with such a prestigious award for the second time this year for our commitment to quality, service and cuisine, not only on behalf of the Maharaja and the team but also on behalf of the hard working men and women that have made this industry what it is, in the last 60 years, but of course, it is our customers who make working in this industry such a pleasure. Thank you"
