The Days of
the Raj came to Glasgow on Saturday 10th March 2007 at the Crowne
Plaza Hotel with the return of the 'Big Apple Ball' fundraiser
attended by a host of entertainment and celebrity guests dressed in
period costume for the glittering Raj-themed occasion.
The Big Apple
Ball is the brainchild of Sanjay Majhu, CEO Apple-Harlequin Group,
who determined to organise a night for pharmacists throughout
Scotland to come together for a night of entertainment in aid of a
good cause. The second Big Apple Ball raised an impressive
£28,616 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Prince and
Princess of Wales Hospice.
Mr Majhu said,
"The Big Apple Ball aims to give an opportunity for those of us
fortunate enough to have our health, to take time out from our busy
lives to think of the less fortunate and give generously. I've always
felt it important to recognise the need to put something back into
good causes."
Compere for
the night was former Scotland rugby captain John Beattie, who later
wowed the crowd with his band, The All Stars, whilst celebrity guests
in attendance included Justin Currie of Del Amitri, Pop Idol Michelle
McManus and Des McLean, Radio Clyde DJ and comedian.
In a message
of thanks, Cara Doran of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said, "The
money raised by the Big Apple Ball will help fund vital research to
enable doctors to care for those with Cystic Fibrosis more
effectively. As a result, those with CF have longer and better lives
than before, though, as yet, there is still no cure.
"The
money raised by supporters of the Big Apple Ball, together with the
constant support of the families of those with CF and their friends,
children born with CF will soon be able to look forward to the same
length and quality of life as the rest of us."
Although only
in its second year, the Big Apple Ball has already firmly established
itself as the main event of the pharmacy sector's fundraising activities.
