Public urged to help Glasgow retain curry title

The restaurants representing Glasgow in this year's Curry Capital of Britain 2007 competition tempted the public with pakora recently when they visited Buchanan Galleries to drum up those all important last minute votes.

The competition, now in its seventh year, sees sixteen cities going head to head to win the prestigious title of Curry Capital of Britain 2007.

India Quay (Charing Cross), The Ashoka (Charing Cross), Panjea (Charing Cross), Ashoka Ashton Lane (West End), and Mother India (West End) were chosen by the public to represent Glasgow.

Staff from the restaurants were at Buchanan Galleries (Ground Floor across from John Lewis) from 12 - 2pm on Wednesday 11 April to give shoppers a taste of what the city has to offer.

Members of the public had until Friday 13 April to vote Glasgow - the current Curry Capitan of Britain - to win the prestigious title for a fourth year. It won the title in 2002 and 2003.

The city council, in its submission to the judging panel, is once again proud to support Glasgow in its quest to be crowned Britain's curry capital for a fourth time.

The council's submission forms part of the criteria for judging as well as the culinary expertise of the five nominated restaurants. Each venue will be visited secretly by a team of 13 independent judges before the winning city is announced in May.

Support for Glasgow has be considerable again this year with numerous glowing recommendations including : Hello

Having toured the length and breadth of the Country to find my Curry Nirvana I can say with some certainty that Glasgow consistently achieves higher standards in its range of Indian restaurants than any other City in the UK.

Therefore I fully support its bid to be Curry Capital of Britain

Tony Trotter

With all the submissions now in it is clear that several councils are making a real effort for the title this year to give Glasgow a run for their money. Front runners along with the current holders seem to be Bradford, Manchester, London East,Birmingham, Leicester and Edinburgh.

Kiplings, the team leader restaurant in Bradford, kicked things off with a tremendous fund raising effort for appointed charity Oxfam of £2011 and London East team leader Mehek obtained the support of London Design House in their efforts to win the title.
