Haiku Opens In London

Sabi Sabharwal, owner of Haiku has spent nine months and £3 million building a replica of his Cape Town restaurant in a Mayfair street.

Four separate kitchens spread over three floors specialise in Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Indian food offering what might be called Asian tapas. Advice to the customer suggests that at least four items per person should be ordered, starting with dishes from the first page, which lists sashimi, sushi, salads, soups and steamed dim sum followed by fried, battered, tandoori-baked and grilled food on the second page. The third page covers wok-fried, curries, noodle and rice dishes.

With prices on the high side, Haiku sashimi platter at £18 to start is surprising;y generous and of a reasonably high quality.

Prices start at £4 and rising to £20, with the majority of items costing between £6 and £12 so eight dishes for two can easily mount up for a meal.

The décor consists of acres of marble, stone and bare wood combine to striking effect, and it will be interesting to watch how this rerstaurant goes once it has settled down.
