It's Official! The HCIMA Has DTI Approval to Change its Name to 'Institute of Hospitality'

It is now official: the Hotel & Catering International Management Association has received formal approval from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to change its name to the 'Institute of Hospitality'. A formal submission will now be made to the Charity Commissioners for a change to the Memorandum and Articles of Association; and the new identity is scheduled to be launched in the spring - together with the new name and logo.

From 2 April 2007, the organisation will be known as the Institute of Hospitality. "We are delighted by the news," said HCIMA Chief Executive Philippe Rossiter FHCIMA. "The new name - the 'Institute of Hospitality' - reinforces the HCIMA's position as an education provider. Since the Association was formed in 1971 - following the amalgamation of the Hotel & Catering Institute (HCI) and the Institutional Management Association (IMA) - the definition of the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry has changed. It is more diverse, and so are our members. The new name takes this fact into consideration, befitting the continually enhanced quality and image of the Association's work and membership services in the 21st century.

"Though, we shall be known as the 'Institute of Hospitality', we will be maintaining continuity in our branding through the continued use of the Association crest, the same colour blue, and including the words 'formerly the HCIMA' over the initial 12-month transitional period."

With a new name comes innovation, and Summer 2007 will see the 'Institute of Hospitality' gain a high profile as the sponsor of one of the industry's 'Oscars' - the prestigious Caterer & Hotelkeeper Education and Training Catey award. It will be the first time in the Cateys' 24 year history that the former HCIMA has sponsored one of the industry's most coveted annual awards, which will go to someone who has demonstrated an innovative approach to continuous learning - with particular regard to the needs of the hospitality industry.

In addition, helping the former HCIMA to celebrate the name change will be another major innovation - the very first Hospitality Lunch, which is to be held on Thursday, 24 May 2007 at the 5-star Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, London. Hosted by what will be then the 'Institute of Hospitality's' Hospitality publication, the Lunch - open to everyone in the UK hospitality, tourism and leisure industry - is being held to celebrate the success of the quarterly magazine, following its re-launch in March 2006.
