Army
chefs added a little spice to their fundraising by holding the
World's Biggest Curry lunch in Warminster.
More than 300 soldiers and Army
civilians dug in to beef curry, Madras and chicken Korma at the Land
Warfare Centre on Thursday to help raise £2,000 for The Army
Benevolent Fund and Help The Heroes.
Across the town, local people
enjoyed tea and buns in the Big Brew charity event running alongside
the curry lunch.
Proceeds from that event, which
was held at Warminster Library, are still being collected.
Colour Sergeant David Ross Mackay
said: "Everyone
seemed to enjoy themselves. It's quite a good social event.
"I'd like to say a big
thank you to everyone who supported the function and also those out
filling cups of tea.
The town mayor Veronica Burden is
a vocal supporter of troops serving in Iraq and was the guest of
honour at the curry lunch.
She said: "In
our society we are always moving onto the next thing but it is
essential we remember the contribution to those who need support and
in this case the service personnel.
"It is vital that we do
remember them. It is easy to forget the wars in our time and the
contribution that many of the service men and women have made.
"There was a magnificent
selection of curries and there were many many people queuing when I
arrived and many many people queuing when I went."
The curry lunch is an annual
event which started in 2007.
Each year the function aims to
raise thousands of pounds for the two charities that support military
personnel and their families serving in both England and abroad. |
