Passione,
the London restaurant of Jamie Oliver's mentor, Gennaro Contaldo,
has closed down after a decade in business, blaming the slowdown in
the U.K. economy it was reported recently.
"We regret
that in the current economic crisis, Passione is now closed,"
says a sign in the window of the Charlotte Street venue, known for
dishes such as wild sorrel risotto, rabbit cooked with garlic and
rosemary and Gelato Passione.
Contaldo, 60, is
the chef behind Jamie's Italian, the eatery chain of Oliver, who is
famous for television shows such as "Jamie's School
Dinners." Passione was named Best Italian Restaurant 2005 in the
Tio Pepe Restaurant Awards.
While Amalfi
Coast-born Contaldo hasn't cooked at Passione for three years, he
remains a director of the company that owns it. He now focuses on
Jamie's Italian, whose fourth branch opened recently in Brighton, on
the south coast of England.
