Manju Mahli was raised in North West London and came to fame when she
won BBC's Food and Drink competition in 1999. Her Simply Indian
series was aired on the Taste Network in 2001 to varied reviews from
Indian chefs and cooks and she has appeared on numerous programmes since.
Her Easy Indian Cookbook is now available in paperback and represents
yet another alternative for home cooks who want to delve into the
mysteries of Indian cuisine. The book is colourful and very simply
laid out and well presented but some of the recipes would have their
critics - the dhansak and even the murg makhani with no cardamom are
just two.
Tandoors are no more popular in private homes in India than in UK and
most Pakistanis and Kashmiris would not use a tandoor for meat. This
book will certainly have its army of followers but the little things
can be annoying such as shahi being translated as regal rather that
royal - a small thing admittedly - or "adjust the intensity to
suit your palette" rather than palate (the rook of your mouth),
which is not such a small thing. |
