'Planet Curry'

It's not only at a national level that the British Curry Awards will raise the industry's profile. News of the 3rd British Curry Awards will be beamed to 150 countries across Europe, North America and Asia by different TV channels making it almost a planetary event.

Undisputedly the most spectacular Awards Ceremony on the British restaurant calendar, this year's British Curry Awards in association with Lloyds TSB Cardnet will take place on Sunday 21st October at the Great Room, Grosvenor House in Park Lane London.

Over 1000 leading figures from the curry restaurant sector will be joined by MPs, diplomats and notable UK and international celebrities from Hollywood to Bollywood for a glamorous occasion befitting the industry's growing status with a spectacular gala curry dinner. Some may well have to watch however as the event is to be hosted by satirical impressionist Rory Bremner, so who knows what other 'virtual' celebs may attend!

The event's founder, Enam Ali, a restaurateur himself said: "With more public nominations than ever, our third event recognises the contribution made by local curry restaurants in virtually every city, town and village, in broadening the UK's cultural base and strengthening its economy. The last two years have established the British Curry Awards as the biggest and most prestigious 'Curry Oscars' in the world and the enthusiasm among restaurants for competing to win one of our awards is definitely 'raising the bar' for standards of cuisine, service, ambience and presentation. So, in every sense, this year's British Curry Awards promises more than ever."

Enam Ali added "The development of our sector has been aided immeasurably for the past 50 years or so, by our ability to import and employ staff from the sub-continent, the people we needed to fill our front and back of house positions who have helped us to run our businesses effectively and provided an authentic Asian experience to our customers. Up to now it hasn't mattered if they were academically unqualified or even illiterate, what really mattered to us and our customers was their skill, their flair and their passion for cooking or serving great food. With the introduction of a points-based entry system designed to limit immigration to those considered by the government to be a) needed and b) educationally suitable, our businesses are threatened. How we deal with this problem is open to debate but that debate needs to start now". http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lvWewHMubjo

The British Curry Awards were founded three years ago to recognise and reward the very best local spice restaurants in the UK as nominated by the Great British public. By 21st October the record-breaking number of public nominations received by post and via the British Curry Awards website will have been whittled down to a 'Top 100' restaurant shortlist and on awards night, just ten restaurants from every corner of the British Isles will have survived the lengthy and independent judging process to be named as Britain's best curry restaurants in their region. A short film of the nominated 30 restaurants will be shown at the event. 10 regional winners on that night will be rewarded for their achievement with an invitation to ascend the rostrum to receive one of the magnificent trophies and to be seen doing so in 127 countries around the world.

For the third successive year Lloyds TSB Cardnet is lead sponsor of the British Curry Awards. Kevin Coles, Head of Marketing said: "We are delighted to continue our support of the curry industry through our sponsorship of this year's British Curry Awards. Credit and debit card transactions account for the vast majority of restaurant purchases and we are here to make accepting them as easy as possible for restaurateurs who see cards as an essential part of growing their businesses."
