Mien Tay
has opened in the heart of East London's Vietnamese community. This
new addition set's itself apart from neighbours of Kingsland Road as
an intimate family-run restaurant with only 30 covers.
The
restaurant is run by the Tran family who originate from the Mien Tay
region in southern Vietnam, it is from here that they have chosen the
name of the restaurant and the emphasis of the flavour of cooking is from.
The decor
reflects the vibrancy of Southern Vietnam with ocean blue walls,
fresh flowers and brightly coloured lotus buds floating on water
filled bowls.
"We
want to welcome customers into a family run restaurant to experience
food as we would cook for our own family" explains
restaurant manager Xia Tran. "We want to remind visitors to
Kingsland Road that there is a delicacy and freshness in Vietnamese
food that is often lost in pre-prepared dishes made in large quantities".
Su Tran leads
the kitchen after fifteen years of working in Vietnamese kitchens,
most recently Tre Viet, Saigon Saigon and Song Que.
The extensive
menu combines both the typical dishes such as Chargrilled Minced Beef
in wild Betel Leaves (£5.50) and Lotus Root Salad with Pork and
Prawns (£5.50) with unusual dishes such as Fried Green Mussels
in Tamarind Sauce (£4.50) and Sizzling Goat with Galangal (£6).
The menu also
serves a selection of whole fish such as Deep Fried Sea Bream with
Fish Sauce and Mango (£8), Steamed Sea Bass with Sweet Bean
(£12.00) and Grilled Mackerel with Banana Leaf (£7).
