A
GLOUCESTERSHIRE restaurant was forced to close and faces a fine of up
to £50,000 after illegal workers were arrested.
A team from
UK Border Agency surrounded Dursley Tandoori, in Long Street, at
around 6pm on Friday and rounded up the workers.
After checks
by immigration officers on the five Bangladeshi men on duty, all
members of staff were found to have no right to work at the
restaurant and arrested.
The five men
- aged 22, 23, 27, 28 and 30 - were taken to Stroud police station
for further questioning, forcing the restaurant to close its doors
for the night.
The men had
been carrying out a variety of jobs at the restaurant including
preparing food in the kitchen and serving customers, while one of the
five identified himself to officers as the manager of the business.
The owners of
Dursley Tandoori were served with five Notices of Potential Liability
for the illegal workers.
They have 28
days to provide the UK Border Agency with evidence that the correct
right-to-work checks were carried out or face a fine of up to
£10,000 per illegal worker. |
