Indian restaurateurs in the UK are having to emphasise cultural
references to achieve standout from their competitors in an
increasingly crowded market, according to research carried out by All
India Arts (www.allindiaarts.com), home of the UK's most exquisite
Indian art paintings and prints collection online, and research from YouGov.
Despite the nation's insatiable appetite for Indian cuisine - recent
YouGov research showing that Indian food is number 2 in the rankings
for Londoner's favourite food; the continued rise in the number of
Indian restaurants opening in the UK is pressuring restaurant owners
to offer customers more than just a plate of food, in the battle to
achieve standout from their competitors, and build a successful
business. Increasingly, many of the existing 9,500* Indian
Restaurants in the UK are achieving that standout, not simply through
the quality of the food on the plate, but through emphasising their
history and cultural references.
Khurshid Malik, owner of Shenaz, Scotland's oldest running Indian
restaurant said: "The increasing number of Indian restaurants
has put pressure on the whole restaurant sector, meaning businesses
have to compete for prominence and invest hugely to achieve standout.
Indian restaurants must offer customers more than just a plate of
food. Just as customers become tired of being served the same dishes
time and again, the onus is one the chef to be creative and offer the
customer something more; so too is it the responsibility of the
restaurateur to ensure that the dining environment is fresh and
inspiring. A key attraction of Indian dining is the venue and
environment itself, but it is only those restaurants who provide
cultural music, use rich, vibrant Indian colours and fabrics and of
course hang historic and traditional art paintings that create a
culturally referenced and magical dining experience - a dining
experience that is essential in achieving the necessary standout in
such a crowded market."
Ram Agarwall, Founder of All India Arts, said: "Restaurant
owners must ask themselves, how do we get ahead? Food and service
aside, how the restaurant looks and what is in it play a key part in
allowing customers to relax and connect with the venue. We have
received increased interest from restaurant owners to allindiarts.com
