National Curry Week
Report

Nahim and his team in the Indian Ocean kitchen

National Curry Week 2008 enjoyed wider media coverage than ever before. The week has now become a generic event in the British calendar with celebrations all over the country, some by those working with the event organisers and others such as Adil, Brakes and Pataks doing their own thing.

The event was covered on Facebook, You Tube and Beebo and on TV, in Daily Newspapers, Regionals and Magazines including :

Big Hospitality(The Restaurant Magazine) (daily throughout the week) ;Timesonline ; The University Caterers Organisation online ; The Sun ; Essentially Catering ; Telegraph ; Coventry Telegraph ; Liverpool Echo ; Dorset Echo ; Eat Out Magazine ; Guardian ; Absolute Radio (was Virgin) ; Closer ; Westmoreland Gazette ; Cumberland News ; The South Yorks Star ; Metro ; Daily Star ; Terry Wogan Radio 2 ; Woman & Home ; Blackpool Citizen ; Get Bracknell ; Cumbrian News & Star ; The Asian News ; Malvern gazette ; Chiltern Radio ; Sunday Herald ; Sky ; Grocery Trader ; Forecourt Trader ; Country Kitchen ; Bournemouth Echo ; Arena ; Leicester Sound ; Hereward FM ; The Lady ; 2cr FM ; Western Morning News ; Mood Food Magazine ; Spice Business ; ITV Northwest ; Index Magazine

Highlights of the week were the amazing World Poppodom Tower record by The Jali in Blackpool, the winning of the XXXMints Can You Handle the Heat Challenge by Alun Sperring of Chilli Pickle, Brighton and of The New 60 Year Dish by top chef Andy Varma of the Gourmet Group.

The Indian Ocean Restaurant & Lounge in Ashton under Lyne raised almost £1000 on behalf of Oxfam during National Curry Week. Their highlight of the week was the Oxfam Charity Dinner, a five-course dinner in the company of guests of honour, the Worshipful Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Tameside. Diners dug deep into their pockets to support a charity raffle and the Indian Ocean contributed £1 for every restaurant meal ordered during the week.

Nahim Aslam, owner of the Indian Ocean, confirmed: "We know that our customers are finding things tougher this year, particularly with Christmas approaching. Nevertheless, we are delighted that their generosity has allowed us to contribute this fantastic sum to such a worthy cause."

At this stage it is not known how much was raised overall for Oxfam for 2008, as donations are sent direct to them from sources all over Britain but indications are very encouraging. The organiser Peter Grove wishes to thank everyone involved for their support and efforts and is already planning for 2009 - please note potential sponsors.
