At a
time when many restaurants are under serious attack from the
financial problems caused by the current downturn in the economy, one
company is providing diners with a value for money solution that will
not break the bank.
Having been
advise by Toby Carvery that a new menu had been introduced giving
diners more choice, we popped along to our local Toby in Cheam to
check things out. The restaurant was buzzing when we arrived early in
the evening and we were sat at a pleasant table overlooked by photos
of Morecambe & Wise and Last of the Summer Wine, amongst others,
whilst we checked out what was on offer.
The first
things that catches the eye is the excellent value of the Wine List.
Litre carafs of wines such as Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay are
available for just £9.25 and bottles of red, white and rose
wines from just £7.95. If your requirements are a little more
exacting you can even try something from from the Speciality Drinks
list such as Hot Spice Apple Brandy (£1.99).
Toby has
always been known for its value carvery, offering a full meal for
just £7.50, and many customers go absolutely mad, piling their
plates so high that one sometimes needs to look elsewhere to avoid
wrecking one's own appetite. That, however, is no fault of Toby and
their new menu has added daily specialities to provide diners with a
wider choice at the same price.
If you visit
on a Monday you may be offered a Lamb Chipotle ; Italian Chicken is
reserved for Wednesday and Wednesday is curry night. Thursday it is
the turn of Pork Goulash and Friday you can try Chicken & Chorizo
Paella. Finally the choice for Saturday is Moroccan Lamb to request
with or instead of your carvery.
As a starter
we tried the Thai King Prawns (£3.90) (which was a very generous
portion of 12 prawns with a piquant sauce) and a very reasonable
Chicken Tikka. The only adverse comment on both dishes was the
accompanying salad which was obviously plated only as a garnish but
which with a drizzle of dressing would have been perfectly edible.
As we visited
on a Tuesday I asked to try the Italian Chicken but it seems that the
new system has not quite settled in yet and Saturday's Moroccan Lamb
was on offer which turned out to be excellent. Unfortunately, unlike
some of the other diners who seemed not to have eaten for several
days, we could not sample the desserts on offer but a good selection
is offered.
Restaurants
such as Toby Carvery are an excellent solution to today's financial
pressures where people still wish to dine out but cannot, perhaps,
afford their usual restaurants. The food is good and the prices quite
brilliant and the new menu additions have offered that extra
dimension that makes a visit even more attractive.
