Uncle
Ben's Sweet And Sour Awards
Michael
Parkinson has beaten Kylie Minogue to be named the UK's Sweetest
celebrity in the inaugural Uncle Ben's Sweet and Sour Awards to
celebrate Chinese New Year. |
Uncle Ben's -
the UK's number one branded rice - asked Brits to nominate the
celebrities who best represented the personalities of something Sweet
and something Sour. The Awards were announced to welcome the Year of
the Dog which officially begins on Sunday, 29th of January.
In a close
race for the UK's Sourest personality, Anne Robinson narrowly beat
Gordon Ramsay and Simon Cowell to take the Award, proving that being
considered sour does not necessarily make someone unpopular.
One in eight
Brits voted to give Michael Parkinson the Uncle Ben's 2006 Sweet
Award, agreeing that he reflects the attributes of a sweet person -
someone who is gentle, affectionate, delightful, kind and likeable.
In addition, Parky was considered to have gentle manners.
While only
just politely defeating Kylie to the number one position, Parky also
saw off Jamie Olivier (no. 3), Sharon Osbourne (no. 4) and Will Young
(no. 5) in a most gentlemanly fashion.
For those
people who do not have access to meet Sweet Parky, it seems wives
have been voted the sweetest people in every day life, followed by
husbands in number two position and daughters in number three.
In a vote
closer than X Factor, Anne Robinson came out as the winner of the
Uncle Ben's 2006 Sour Award with 20% of the vote. Robinson's success
was due to her displaying attributes such as being disagreeable,
harsh, grouchy and ill-tempered.
But in a
surprising twist, it seems that being considered 'sour' can actually
help with a personality's popularity. Such individuals keep the UK on
the edge of it seats while it waits for their next shocking outburst
- outrageous behaviour keeping the public completely intrigued.
The inclusion
of personalities such as Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell, Jude Law and
Pete Doherty in the top ten Sour list seems to prove that following
Flower Power and Girl Power, the latest trend to be part of is Sour Power!
Whether this
translates into every day life, however, is debatable, with the
Sourest people that Brits actually know apparently being their brothers.
Uncle Ben's
spokesperson, Jo Hewlett, says that Brits embrace both Sweet and Sour
personalities, loving them both for different reasons.
"Brits
warm to Sweet personalities because they make us go 'ahhh' and want
to be close to them," Hewlett says.
"On the
other hand, we are drawn to those who are Sour to see just what
they're going to come up with next! The most interesting time is when
we get Sweet and Sour together which becomes the most compulsive
recipe for excitement!"
Chinese New
Year is becoming more and more popular, with almost one in ten
families planning to welcome the Year of the Dog with a Chinese meal
at home or by taking part in festivities.
