The Famous Grouse Experience Invests £50K In Whisky And Cookery School

The Famous Grouse Experience, home to Scotland's favourite whisky, today announced it is the first whisky distillery to launch a Cookery School and Whisky School. In addition, a new Malt Experience is being designed to showcase The Famous Grouse Malt range, distributed by Maxxium UK.

The BAFTA award-winning distillery, located in Crieff, is investing over £50,000 to develop these new facilities. In particular the Malt Experience, to be used exclusively for The Whisky School, will provide a unique opportunity for consumers to see behind the scenes and view areas of the distillery normally closed to the public.

The one-day Cookery School which launches in February will be run by award-winning chef, Steven Craik. It will involve an introduction to the distillery and participation in The Famous Grouse Malt Challenge, enabling consumers to discover and re-create dishes which marry malts to different foods.

The Whisky School, opening at the end of March, will be led by Neil Cameron, manager of Scotland's oldest working distillery in Glenturret. Set up to provide an insight into the nation's favourite drink, visitors will learn everything from whisky distillation and blending, through to nosing and tasting.

Commenting on the new initiative, Neil Cameron said: "The one-day Whisky School will allow consumers to enjoy the full sensory encounter when they visit the new Malt Experience. For the first time, consumers will be able to "nose" straight from the cask of The Famous Grouse Malt range, exclusive to the distillery."

Jeremy Speirs, general manager of The Famous Grouse Experience, said: "The launch of these new courses and the Malt Experience marks a whole new chapter at The Experience that has seen significant reinvestment in the last 12 months. With such prolific growth in the malt whisky sector, opening these courses allows us to bring alive both the nosing and tasting elements of blended malt whisky and its perfect marriage with Scottish food."

The experience has won a number of prestigious awards including a BAFTA for its interactive show, five-star accreditation from VisitScotland and was recently named Perthshire Business of the Year 2006. The Cookery School costs £100 and can be purchased as a voucher. Places are limited to 14 at a time. The dates for the first classes, which run from 10am to 4pm, are Friday 30th March, Friday 4th May and Friday 28th September.
