Nepalese Offers Variety

Many curry fans have their enjoyment in the cuisine firmly rooted in Bangladeshi or Punjabi dishes they know and love. Nepalese cuisine, whilst very close to the cuisines of other parts of the sub-continent, is subtly different and offers a variation on the familiar.

One such restaurant breaking into an area previously dominated by Bangladeshi and Puinjabi restaurant is Vancha Ghar in Tolworth, Surrey. Although small, this restaurant is incredibly friendly with beaming waiters and a fascinating open kitchen.

The menu offers a good selection of tasty starters and we tried aloo chat, Aduwa Chap Lamb Chops and a new one for us - Chhoala - delicious, roasted lamb pieces marinated with ginger, garlic, spices, mustard oil and methi seed.

There are plenty of fascinating choices for main course including Sherpa Lamb, Poleko Sea Bass, Tarkari mixed vegetable curry, Bhatti Chicken, a Nepalese pub dish and Jangali Mutton Aloo, the favoured dish of the brave and almost foolhardy Himalayan honey hunters who harvest the honey from the world's largest bees Apis laboriosa.

Each dish we tried was cleverly spiced and well presented and those of us who had never tried Nepalese food before became immediate converts.

Vancha Ghar does not seem to have hit the headlines either locally or nationally as yet but it is certainly a hidden gem and deserves its place in the sun.
