Go WEST For World's Strongest Beer!

The world's strongest beer is now available in the UK for the first time exclusively at WEST, the Glasgow-based independent brewery.

At an amazing 40% vol, the Schorschbock is the strongest lager beer in the world. It is brewed by Schorschbräu, a craft brewer of speciality strong beer based in Oberasbach, in the middle of the Franconia's lake region. And it is a Franconian connection that has brought Schorschbräu to the UK for the first time.

Petra Wetzel, from Bamberg in Bavaria, is the woman behind the award-winning WEST bar, brewery and restaurant on Glasgow Green.

Ms Wetzel said, "As a Franconian, I'm delighted to introduce Schorschbock, the world's strongest beer, to the UK to show my support for the tremendous work done by my fellow countrymen and brewers.

"The Schorschbock has a totally unique flavour that will appeal to any beer connoisseur and sits well alongside our own range of award-winning premium quality lagers brewed right here in Glasgow. Due to its exceptional strength and rarity, we are restricting sales of Schorschbock to one measure per customer."

Schorschbock is produced through Schorschbräu's own proprietary fermentation process using a combination of traditional brew house work and a rarely used method for producing ice bock supplemented by extended cold-lagering (a minimum of six months).

Like the Schorschbock, all WEST's beers meet the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 (the German Purity Law; the oldest food law in the world which ensures only the finest, purest beer is deemed fit for consumption).

WEST recently won three gold medals from the DLG, the prestigious Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (German Agricultural Society) - the first time that any lager brewed in the UK has received a medal from the DLG. WEST achieved triple gold medal status at its first attempt.

WEST won gold for its St. Mungo lager, it's homage to Glasgow's patron saint and fellow brewer St Mungo, a second gold for its Hefeweizen, a wheat beer which rivals the great wheat beers in Europe, and a third gold for its Dunkel, its speciality dark lager, which the DLG assessor described as 'simply outstanding'.

WEST operates a full production brewery and is home to a stylish beer hall and restaurant with a beer garden overlooking Glasgow Green. WEST brewery, bar & restaurant is open seven days a week, 11am till 11pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to midnight Friday and Saturday. Brewery tours are available by arrangement.
