A taste of rural Italy is coming to County Durham later this month
with the launch of a restaurant inspired by one of the country's most
popular regions.
The Italian Farmhouse at West Rainton, near Houghton-le-Spring, will
open on Friday, 12 February, with a look and menu inspired by Puglia
in South East Italy.
The region, often known as the 'heel' of the country is famed for its
production of olive oil and pasta and the new 70 seater Italian
Farmhouse has been specifically designed to bring the flavour of this
area to the North East, in both the food offerings and the authentic
fixtures and fittings.
The menu will focus on traditional Italian foods that are popular
among the Puglia locals, including meat, fish, pastas such as
maccheroni and pizza dishes, like the well-known calzone and all will
be made using ingredients sourced close to the Italian Farmhouse.
The Farmhouse restaurant and pizzeria, on the site of the former
Greyhound pub at South Street is owned by Mark Hird, Managing
Director of leading North East leisure firm Tavistock Leisure Ltd and
his wife Nicola. The couple founded Nicmark Leisure early last year
and this will be their first venture undertaken together.
Mark Hird said: "Puglia is a beautiful part of Italy and offers
a true taste of what Italians themselves love to eat, including lamb,
beef, pasta, cheese and fresh vegetables which are all in abundant supply.
"We are very excited about incorporating all of this into our
first venture under the Nicmark brand and about bringing a true taste
of Italy to Country Durham."
