And Then There Were Four

Once upon a time those in the Asian restaurant sector despaired of ever gaining recognition from such guides as Michelin. Then Tamarind with Atul Kochhar as chef and Zaika with Vineet Bhatia rattling the pans broke the mould and gained a much deserved star.

Since then the sector hasn't looked back. In this year's star awards announced on 24 January (the Michelin Guide is in bookshops from 26 January) Tamarind retains its star for yet another year; Amaya and Rasoi Vineet Bhatia confirm the one star first gained last year and at last we have a fourth in Benares.

This is a second experience of the excitement of a Michelin star for the first time for owner/chef Atul Kochhar and he become the second chef in the Indian sector to have gained a star in one restaurant and another in their own establishment.

The Guide awarded 13 new star restaurants this year with 5 in London. Others in the ethnic sector with a star are Assaggi, Hakasaan, Locanda Locatelli, Nahm, Nobu, Nobu Berkeley, Zafferano, Umu, Yuatcha and River Café.
