Edinburgh
restaurateur Tommy Miah was such a success leading the Bangladesh
team at the first SAARC Food Festival in Delhi last month --
answering an " out of the blue" request from the Foreign
Office -- that the Embassy in Tokyo has now asked him to demonstrate
his culinary skills in Japan.
The Embassy has organised a
Bangladesh Week at the prestigious City Club of Tokyo and the week
will kick-off with Tommy cooking typical Bangla dishes for the
wealthy membership.
He has devised an attractive menu
certain to satisfy the demanding tastes of top-flight Japanese
businessmen and officials as well as the international diplomats and
expatriates who use the club.
Tommy says he feels specially
honoured to fly the flag for his homeland a second time.
"It's all fits in with my
personal mission to promote real knowledge of Bangladesh all over the world,"
he said. "Many people think of our country only as a poor
place prone to disasters and ignore its vibrant heritage and
intelligent people."
Despite running his UK business
and being deeply involved in arranging the final of the International
Indian Chef of the Year competition he started in 1991, he has
dropped everything to help promote Bangladesh.
He flew from Edinburgh to Tokyo
on Saturday, returning by way of Dhaka some days later.
