Indian food fans were able to
name their price for a charity buffet in aid of the Bangladesh
Cyclone Disaster Appeal according to a local newspaper report.
The Rajah Indian Restaurant in
Market Cross, Malmesbury opened their doors for nine and a half hours
between 12.30pm and 10pm recently to raise funds. Food was available
all day and customers were invited to eat as much as they wanted and
pay as much as they like.
All the money raised will go
towards helping the victims of cyclones on the southern coast of
Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal.
Bangladesh is the most populated
country in the world and the latest cyclone last month claimed 10,000 lives.
The Bangladeshi Association in
Wiltshire has already donated £10,000 and it is hoped that the
series of charity buffets across the county will raise even more.
Restaurant owner Mahar Ullah, 41,
lived in Bangladesh until he was 14 and his father is still there. He
said: "We are hoping to raise as much as we can in
Malmesbury. We always get a lot of support from our community so
Malmesbury has been really great.
"I think it is our duty
to help and it is where we are from and it reminds us how lucky we
are to be living in England.
"I've been here 27 years
and I have never seen a flood and when I was there as a boy it
happened every year.
"We don't see people in
pain or suffering anymore so we realise how lucky we are."
Mr Ullah owns another restaurant
in Hungerford and has been supporting the Cyclone Appeal since he
opened his restaurant nine years ago.
He said: "Whatever money
people can give will help.
"The currency here is so
good that £1 makes 140 Rupees. That could feed two or three
people. It is a third world country. £1000 is nothing here but
it could feed 1000 people over there."
Mr Ullah was inspired to help the
cyclone appeal by his brother in law Arju Miah MBE, who owns the Taj
Mahal restaurant in Chippenham, after he set up the charity.
North Wiltshire MP James Gray,
who became a patron of the Bangladesh Cyclone Disaster Charity in
December, has pledged to help the appeal in any way he can.
