Brits Turn To Balti
In Battle Of The Bulge

Get as fit as a footballer's wife with the nation's favourite health food

Fed up Brits are turning to curry to help them lose weight according to the owner of Ignite - Taste of Raj in Congleton.

After the excesses of Christmas and gloom of the credit crunch, people are looking to literally tighten their belts with a New Year diet and have found an unlikely ally in curry.

An Indian restaurant that has been dishing up healthy meals for fit footballers and their waif-like wives for more than 18 years is leading the curry revolution, and changing the unhealthy image of the nation's favourite food.

"We use low-cholesterol cooking fat instead of traditional ghee and have a fish-focused menu. The meat that we serve is also organic and locally-reared," says Sir Anam Islam, owner of Ignite - The Authentic Taste of Raj in Congleton, Cheshire.

"Our healthy recipes and cooking methods have been a favourite with Manchester United players for years and it doesn't seem to have done them any harm. Their wives also love our curries because they say they can't eat it anywhere else without getting fat."

"They order takeaways for their dinner parties, which is a great honour for us."

The health benefits associated with spices have been known for thousands of years, so the spice content alone is enough to classify curry as a veritable super food.

By eliminating ingredients such as traditional ghee and opting for healthier cuts of meat - if not fish - then you remove the only aspects of a curry that make it anything other than a delicious and nutritious dish.

"You can enjoy the nation's favourite food at Ignite without feeling guilty," says Sir Anam, "and you might even recognise a few famous faces."
