Winners Of The
23rd Annual Chablis
Wine Awards Announced

302 samples from four appellations, 75 tasters, the best wines of 2006 and 2007 harvests

On 9th/ 10th January 2009 the Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB) hosted the 23rd Annual Chablis Wine Awards, identifying the finest wines of the 2006 and 2007 vintages.

The awards brought together a jury of 75 wine tasters from France and Europe, including oenologists, sommeliers, restaurant owners, technicians, wine tasters, amateurs and independent wine growers.

"This event is an important opportunity to honor the best of Chablis wines, to promote the winegrowers and the region," says Arnaud Valour, spokesperson of Chablis wines.

2007 vintages in the Petit Chablis, Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru appellations were entered this year, while 2006 harvests were presented for the Chablis Grand Cru appellation.

This year, the 2006 Chablis Grand Cru proved to be a particularly good vintage offering rounded wines with silky features. According to Arnaud Valour, the jurors' work was cut out for them in deciding upon a winner in this appellation.

"For the Petit Chablis, Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru, the 2007 harvest was a more traditional, classical crop. Wines were bright and vivacious, with strong mineral notes.

"The character of these 2007 wines can be appreciated early for their youthful and refreshing characteristics, but these wines will age well to reveal more complex additional aromas such as dried fruits and crispy cake," describes Arnaud Valour.

Twenty wine tasting groups were responsible for selecting the top three wines from a batch of approximately fifteen entries. These top wines were then tasted a second time by a super-jury that ultimately selected the winners.

"The Chablis Awards are a wonderful opportunity for top winegrowers to receive recognition for their work and they offer a real chance to demonstrate the diversity and quality of Chablis wines," comments Jean-Paul Durup, one of the region's winegrowers.
