The
English Whisky Co. is England's only Whisky Distiller and occupies a
10 acre site in Roudham, Norfolk.
The English Whisky Co was the
long term dream of James Nelstrop. The distillery was conceived in
early 2006 and was producing spirit 10 months later. It also boasts
purely English ingredients in its process.
So far 50,000 visitors have
toured the distillery and its most famous visitor to date is HRH The
Prince of Wales who came on a private visit.
The distillery's first whisky
maker was the world famous Iain Henderson who has worked at many of
the best-known distilleries in Scotland but is most closely
associated with Islay's Laphroaig which he managed for 14 years.
The Distilling has been going on
at the site for over two years, and the warehouses are filled with
"whisky in waiting "of approximately 1000 casks. Total
output of the distillery will be in the region of 200,000 70cl
bottles per annum.
The distillery building
itself has a conference centre that is available for general hire, a
coffee shop, a very well stocked whisky shop - selling not just
English whisky but whiskies from around the world.
You can also buy The English
Whisky Co's "not yet whisky" which is 18 months old part
matured whisky which was blind tasted by the Danish Malt Whisky
Academy who compared it favourably to a fully matured whisky.
Dominic Roskrow, renowned
whisky critic, is enthusiastic about St George's distillery and the
impact it might have; "It's very exciting that we have
England's first fully operational licensed whisky distillery but it
should not come as a surprise. Norfolk produces some of the best
barley in the world and has always exported it to Scotland for whisky
and beer production."
