Scotland's First Specialist Thali Restaurant Launches World's First Scottish Thali in Celebration of Burns Night

Thali, Scotland's first specialist Thali restaurant, has launched the world's first Scottish Thali to mark Burns Night on Sunday 25th January.

A hidden gem, tucked away in Albion Street in the heart of Glasgow's thriving Merchant City, Thali offers a fresh alternative to Indian Cuisine available elsewhere in the city by introducing authentic Indian street food to Glasgow for the first time.

But the creation of the first ever Scottish Thali suggests that the restaurant is unlikely to remain a treasured secret fiercely guarded by the cognoscenti for much longer!

Harry Dilber, Manager at Thali, said, "The first Scottish Thali is comprised of those Indian dishes that have proved most popular in Scotland, many of them concocted in Scotland by India chefs over the last few decades. It includes a mouth-watering selection of dishes, including chicken tikka chasni, masala and, of course, haggis pakora for a set price of only £12.95."

'Thali' is a generic word used to describe a large platter that carries a selection of curries served in 'katoris' (small bowls). Anything may be used as a Thali - the rich eat off silver, others from brass, copper or stainless steel, while in places like south India, washed banana leaves become plates - whatever the platter, the meal is no less a feast.

Mr Dilber said, "The Thali is best enjoyed by spooning a small portion of food from an individual Katori next to the rice, in the Thali itself - no plates required. Served on a traditional Thali, these dishes can be eaten as a starter or light snack. On arrival, all diners are offered a refreshing glass of Nimbu Pani - a home-made still lemonade that cleanses your palate in preparation for your meal.

"And Thali can be a cost-effective way of eating out as diners can combat the effects of the credit crunch by having greater scope for control over what they choose to spend on their night out than in more traditional restaurants."

The world's first Scottish Thali will be available for a limited period only - from Burns Night on Sunday 25th January until St. Valentine's Day on Saturday 14th February, when the Valentine's Thali will take over - offering a five course lovers' feast for £25.00 per person.

Located at 42 Albion Street, Thali is open from 12 Noon until 2.00 p.m. and from 5.00 p.m. until 11.00 p.m. on weekdays and from 12 Noon until 11.00 p.m. on weekends.
