Restaurants Feel The Squeeze

Restaurants all over the country are feeling the squeeze as customer levels are hit by a combination of the World Cup, hot weather and market conditions.

In the ethnic sector restaurants as far apart as London and Glasgow are reporting customer levels down as much as 25% or more as people stay away for a variety of reasons. Pub/restaurant group Harvester, who thought there would be a good supply of people who wanted to eat out to get away from the World Cup have also found customer levels down around 25% and many outlets are feeling the pinch.

The fall in restaurant consumption is seen particularly in the drinks sector whereas in the supermarkets the story is completely different. As people decide to drink at home and enjoy a BBQ or ready meal brewer Carlsberg cannot get supplies out of the depot fast enough to satisfy demand.

At the World Cup England fans are drinking Germany dry. Breweries warned that beer could run out before the final due to demand. In Nuremberg fans drank 1.2 millions pints of beer during the Trinidad game reports The Sun. Stuttgart landlords said an extra 900,000 pints were sunk last weekend as 60,000 fans celebrated England's win over Ecuador.

In Cologne - where England drew with Sweden - pubs ran out of bottles and barrels.
