A
fashion show in association with John Lewis, Principles and Joy held
in Liverpool has raised money to help India's homeless 'street women
and children'.
The charity
dinner event at Mayur Indian restaurant in Duke Street was organised
for Prayas as part of a UK campaign led by Bollywood actor-turned
politician Shatrughan Sinha.
Prayas
provides shelter, food and clothing and support to women and children
struggling to live on the streets of India.
More than 150
guests were treated to cuisine from the different regions of India,
traditional Indian dancing from UK Bollywood star Paarul and a
performance from Pop Stars' singer Andrew Coleman.
Students from
Red Hot Media Acting Academy modelled traditional Indian outfits with
Bang & Olufsen of Liverpool, Boots and Malmaison all contributing
raffle prizes to the event that generated thousands of pounds on the night.
Mayur
co-owner Suhail Ahmed said: "So many local businesses and
organisations supported the event with kind donations and gave up
their time and energy to make this happen.
"We
are very grateful because as the stark DVD showed on the night, this
organisation really needs our help and the people of Liverpool have
once again demonstrated their generosity."
The evening
was so successful the raffle and auction alone raised more than
£1,000 for the Indian charity.
Charity
compere for the evening Joel Jelen said: "Mayur wants to
continue its campaign of supporting Prayas in future events. In
speaking with him, I know how proud Prayas' general secretary Amod
Kanth was on the night having travelled to Liverpool from New Delhi
to be at the event."
