A cookery school with an African twist

Ghanaian cookery school Launched by Raymond Blanc protégés

This month sees the launch of London's first and only Ghanaian cookery school, brought to you by catering entrepreneurs Lloyd and Adwoa Hagan-Mensah of Jollof Pot (you might remember them from Raymond Blanc's BBC2 series The Restaurant). The school runs a novel and engaging programme of cooking workshops for businesses and consumers alike.

The Summer 2010 programme of workshops includes a range of different specialities such as African inspired canapé making and full dinner party catering. Classes are designed to accommodate all levels of cooks, from novices to wannabe chefs, and include fun and simple demonstrations of traditional and contemporary Ghanaian cooking methods.

Students have the opportunity to prepare a number of authentic dishes from scratch, using the finest ingredients sourced from ethnic markets within the capital. Once the meals have been prepared, delegates then enjoy the fruits of their labour at a sit-down meal during which Adwoa, who leads the classes, obligingly demonstrates how to chow down African style - eating with hands is optional! Meals are served with generous helpings of Palm wine and Ghanaian beer, making for a truly authentic African dining experience.

The sessions are rounded up with an interactive recap of the techniques covered and delegates receive a complementary hamper of African spices, ingredients and recipe cards to take home and experiment with.

Founder Adwoa Hagan-Mensah says: "Spending time at Raymond Blanc's cookery school, Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons, inspired us to launch our own cookery school. London is such a melting pot of cultures and the vast array of cuisines available suggests that the time is now right for a Ghanaian cookery school. Our workshops are a great way for people to bond and we're seeing from our first few sessions that the sit down meals are a real hit with attendees."

The workshops take place at the new Jollof Pot kitchens in east London and can cater for group bookings of up to 16. An average session runs from 10am-3pm, however bespoke half day, full day and evening workshops are also available.

Courses start from £80.00 per person or £120.00 for couples. (Prices exclude VAT).*Summer promotion £50.00 per person or £80.00 per couple. Offer ends 31 Aug 2010*
