Recognition for Edinburgh Restaurateur

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF EDINBURGH’S BRITANNIA SPICE WINS RECOGNITION FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CHARITY WORK

The owner of one of Scotland’s best-loved restaurants has been awarded Curry King of the Year at the Scottish Curry Awards. Dr Wali Uddin MBE, of Britannia Spice restaurant in Leith, received the award in recognition for the extensive charity work he has been involved in during the last year and his time in Scotland.

Dr Uddin, an eminent business-man who was awarded a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to race relations, was shocked to receive the award, which was kept under wraps until the winner was announced on the night.

Dr. Wali Uddin has been involved in the UK’s curry industry since 1967 taking the Scottish dining scene by storm in 2000 with the opening of his restaurant in Edinburgh. 2010 sees his dedication to charitable endeavours mixed with his passion for curry continue with his support for Concern Worldwide’s Bangladeshi pavement dweller campaign Amrao Manush project.

The award, which was presented by Shabir Hussian of Akbar’s, is one of many won by Dr Wali Uddin during his career, but he has expressed particular gratitude at receiving such a prestigious title from the Scottish awards.

Dr Uddin said: “It is a particular honour to win this title in my home of Scotland. I have always worked hard to promote the curry industry in Scotland and like to think that I have helped to make curry Scotland’s favourite dish. This award means such a lot because it has been given to me by in Scotland by Scotland’s media.”

Dr Wali’s career has been long and diverse. He was the first Honorary Consul-General of Bangladesh in Scotland and was the youngest person in Scotland to be made Justice of the Peace. He has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lloyds TSB Asian Jewel Awards and is a founding director of the acclaimed Edinburgh Mela.

One of the most important campaigns Wali has been involved in this year is the Amrao Manush campaign, which he spearheaded for Concern Worldwide. He teamed up with the international charity Concern Worldwide to launch the campaign which helps street dwellers in Bangladesh.
