Food And Wine Is All Thai'd Up At Jim Thompson's

New food and wine pairing launches with the Thai twist.

Thai Pad, the a-la-carte restaurant within Jim Thompson's bar and bazaar at 408 Upper Richmond Road, London SW15, is launching a new menu from June where food and wine are made for each other. Chosen specifically for their affinity with the Thai cuisine, the wines are literally 'thai'd up' on four special menus, ranging from £16.95 t0 £26.95, providing a feast for all the senses.

The best selling JT Feast at £26.95, which includes five starters, a middle course of Crispy aromatic duck, five mains and Steamed jasmine rice, is 'thai'd up' with Sauvignon Blanc, Central Valley Chile, whose citrus flavours and mouth-watering acidity cut through the rich taste of Thai fish cakes and Garlic prawns with chilli, whilst the unusual Stump Jump (Grenache, Shiraz, Mouvedre) from Australia is bold enough to handle Crispy aromatic duck and Stir-fried beef with ginger. The wines are £15.50 and £16.75 per bottle, respectively.

The Spice Merchant Feast at £23.95 offers five starters and five mains plus rice, and is paired with Riesling, Wolf from Germany, whose flavours of pears and honey are balanced with good acidity, making it a perfect, medium sweet wine for the spicy dishes in the menu, such as Spicy Thai green curry with Thai pea aubergines and Braised monkfish in a tamarind sauce with spiced orange zest. The Pinot Noir Mad Fish from Australia is a textured wine with black cherry and spice, perfect for dishes with chilli and soy, and a great match for the Roast duck breast part of this menu. The wines are £16.50 and £21.50 per bottle respectively.

The Dragon Dancer Feast - four starters, four mains and rice for £21.95 - offers an equally attractive and new taste sensation, where Chenin Blanc Boland Cellar from South Africa takes centre stage with its fruity flavours and crisp acidity, crucial for dishes like Thai fish cakes and Sweet and sour crispy pork with pineapple. The USA Merlot, King Fish Delicato has that all-important acidity along with flavours of plums and dark cherry for a great match with the Red duck curry with green peppercorn served in a clay pot. The wines are £15.95 and £14.95 per bottle respectively.

The Monk's Vegetarian Feast Menu at £16.95, four starters, four main and rice, offers Chardonnay 'Organic Vineyards' Chilcas from Chile, chosen specifically for its smoothness, to enhance Rice paper pancakes and Sweet corn fritters. The floral aromatics of the Monastrell Organic, Casa de la Ermita Joven from the Jumilla area in Spain, are ideal for flavours like jasmine and sweet basil found in Thai aubergine curry, and the wine's liquorice notes also accompany well the black bean sauce of the Stir fried tofu with egg noodles. The wines are £14.95 per bottle each.

Diners are encouraged to experiment, with waiters specially trained to offer suggestions and advice. The pairings are made easier when choosing the set menus but the wines can be matched with other dishes from the a-la-carte for different taste sensations.

FOR YOUNG DINERS

With the adults taken care of with these new food and wine pairings, children too are encouraged to try something new and different and to eat healthily from a young age. To make healthy eating more tempting, adult dishes are made easy, attractive and accessible in a Bento Box for young diners up to 10 years. There is a choice of starter and main course with vegetables, rice or noodles and crispy prawn crackers for £5.95. This includes delicious dishes such as Chicken and sweet corn soup, Honey roast pork ribs with hoi-sin sauce, Stir-fired chicken with Thai broccoli and sweet basil, Roast duck breast with Choy Sum and orange sauce and much more.

Vibrant, welcoming and relaxed, Thai Pad's interior is enhanced by the hanging bazaar of genuine Thai artefacts, most of which are for sale. Here, one is literally transported to the Orient for the price of a meal, dining among sumptuous silk hangings, antique Javanese marble tables, Indian statues, Thai wood carvings and chairs made of Javanese coconut tree wood. Prices range from £4.99 to around £6,000. But then, in typical Oriental bazaar style, one can haggle for the price!

Thai Pad seats 90 people and there is an intimate al fresco dining area in summer. It is open every day from 6pm to 11.00pm, including Bank Holidays (closed on Christmas Day). A private room accommodates 50 people for meetings, business lunches and parties. Jim Thompson's bar sits 60 people, and is open all day. The bar menu offers Oriental and English dishes and two-course meals for £11.95 served until 7 pm.
