This year's
Sammies - the annual British Sandwich Industry Awards - turned into a
virtual away day for Marks & Spencers with the retailer taking
four out of the 14 awards presented at the annual dinner at the
Brewery, Chiswell Street, London on May 18.
This is the
second year in a row that Mark & Spencer has won both the
sandwich retailer and new sandwich of the year categories.
Phillip Brown,
founder of the successful and very individual Philpott's sandwich bar
chain, was also recognised for the support he has given the industry
over the years, while his business walked off with the Sandwich Bar
Chain of the Year Award for the 6th time in 11 years.
However, while
established bigger names took a number of the awards, there was also
acknowledgement for a number of newer operations, including
Café Mana in London which took the Independent Sandwich Bar
category.
With £3.5
billion spent annually on some 2 billion commercially-made sandwiches
each year, the Sammies are considered to be one of the most important
events annually for encouraging innovation and development in this
massive industry, which employs over 300,000 people in the UK.
