Drifters' Star Hits the High Notes at Spice Master

Star performer FiL Straughan received rapturous applause for his Lionel Richie and Luther Vandross tribute by customers of Spice Master Restaurant at a Charity/Cabaret Evening on behalf of Greenwich & Bexley Cottage Hospice on Monday 15th May, in the presence of the Mayor of Bexley.

The restaurant at 45/47 Nuxley Road, Belvedere, Kent was fully booked as FiL, a member of the original 'Drifters' group who toured with 'Hot Chocolate' performed his mellow magic, with an amazing vocal range, holding impossibly high top notes with sweetness and extraordinary length. A groovy mover on the dance floor too, he charmingly engaged in tuneful banter with his audience, and by the end of the cabaret as the beat became hotter, Spice Master's dance floor was a mass of gyrating disco dancers.

£1,000 was raised from the event by a percentage of Spice Master's dinner takings, together with the generosity of the restaurant customers, and the efforts of the Hospice' fund-raising team - Joint Chief Executive Jim Bennett, Fundraising Manager Howard King, and Community Fundraiser Susan Adams, assisted by the Mayor of Bexley John Shepheard with FiLStraughan participating. First there was a raffle of quality items - a large cuddly teddy bear, a pamper hamper and a bottle of champagne; then an auction of luxury goods - a portable CD player, luxury hamper and a case of white wine.

Greenwich & Bexley Cottage Hospice, which was co-founded in 1985, is situated in Abbey Wood South East London, and is a unique example of two London Boroughs working together to provide respite, symptom control and palliative care for life-limiting illnesses, to residents of Greenwich and Bexley. A registered charity, the Hospice relies heavily on donations from the public for two-thirds of its income, with one-third being provided by Primary Care Trusts. The in-patient beds have now increased to 19, there is a Day Patient Unit, a Day Care facility, and Clinics.
