Restaurant Pays First Fine Of Smoking Ban

ONE of Glasgow's top Chinese restaurants is the first venue in Scotland to be fined for flouting the smoking ban.

The Peking Inn in Hope Street was hit with a fixed-penalty notice following an incident the day after the ban came into force in March. After losing an appeal, the owner has agreed to pay the £200 fine demanded of licensees and proprietors who don't enforce the ban.

It is understood staff allowed a customer to smoke in the restaurant - despite all the warnings that the law would be enforced. According to documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, the notice was issued on 29 March for the offence committed two days earlier.
