The Raj
Restaurant, 85-91 Henderson Street, Leith, EH6, is celebrating its
21st anniversary this month with a gala dinner given by Tommy Miah,
Bangladeshi entrepreneur and chef patron of the Raj. Lord Fraser of
Carmyllie QC will host the event on Thursday June 28 and invited
guests include Alex Salmond, the new First Minister of Scotland. The
evening will be held in aid of Cancer Research UK. For bookings and
details of the week of special anniversary offers at the restaurant,

The Raj was
opened by Tommy in 1986 on the site of one of Scotland's oldest
cinemas - which, sadly, closed in 1930 when the 'talkies' arrived as
it couldn't afford the necessary sound equipment. Since the opening
of the Raj, the Leith area has really taken off as a dining
destination, and the area around Edinburgh's port area is now a mecca
for eating out, with a number of Michelin-star restaurants.
The two-storey
Raj Restaurant has a picturesque setting overlooking Leith water, and
the restaurant's large windows ensure diners on both floors can make
the most of the view. It is open for lunch and dinner daily, serving
a regularly changing menu of Tommy's Indian and Bangladeshi
specialities. Tommy is especially sensitive to the requirements of
his increasingly health conscious diners, and the menu highlights,
for example, the tandoor, or clay oven cooked, dishes which are low
calorie and low fat. At lunchtimes a special menu of lighter dishes
is available, as well as an Express Lunch option, priced at just
£5.95 for two courses, including rice and naan bread.
As part of the
anniversary celebrations, the Raj Restaurant is planning a week of
special menus from June 24. The menus will include winning dishes
from the annual International Indian Chef of the Year competition,
founded by Tommy in 1991. Certain to appear are Lorient Special
Chicken (diced chicken, with onions, tomatoes, yoghurt, ground
almonds, coconut and coriander) and Gosht Papani (marinated lamb with
peas, chilli, garlic, ginger, tomato and cinnamon). The 2007/8,
free-to-enter Indian Chef of the Year competition will be launched at
a House of Commons reception on July 25. It is open worldwide to all
amateur or professional cooks over the age of 18.
The Raj
restaurant is open daily for lunch from noon to 2.30pm and dinner
from 5.30pm to 11.30pm (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays). The
restaurant also offers takeaway and outside catering, and can host
private events for up to 100 guests on its upper floor.
The Raj Group
also includes the Original Raj Hotel in Edinburgh. Raj hotels are due
to open in London and Chittagong, Bangladesh later this year. Tommy
Miah is a leading Bangladeshi entrepreneur, running a number of
businesses in both the UK and Bangladesh.
