Years Young Restaurant Claims Top Award
The results
of the 15th annual Best in Britain Awards (BIBA) for the ethnic
restaurant industry were announced yesterday and saw the veteran
Brilliant Restaurant in Southall carry off the BIBA Best in London
& the South 2007 against competition from the likes of top Indian
restaurants Chutney Mary, Tamarind and Bombay Brasserie.
The judges
commented "'The only one of its kind' is how their website
describes this winner. The Brilliant in Southall has been an
institution for many years run by Kewal & Gulu Anand. Now, run by
Gulu's son and daughter, the restaurant has been brought right into
the 21st century showing the way for others and fully deserves the award. |
Masala World
including Chutney Mary, Amaya, Veeraswamy and Masala Zone carried of
the BIBA Group of the Year title and Dr Wali Tasar Uddin's Britannia
Spice in Edinburgh carried off the BIBA Best in Scotland title.
BIBA Industry
Personality of the Year was :Lord Karan Bilimoria, CEO of Cobra Beer
. Chair of judges Peter Grove, editor of Menu Magazine said "The
winner this year has to be Lord Karan Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE DL.
Appointed to the House in June 2006 he must be one of Britain's most
prolific award recipients in addition to being the very successful
CEO of Cobra Beer. Other awards are Honorary Doctor of Staffordshire
University 2006, Honorary Doctor of Letters Heriot-Watt University
2005, Honorary Doctor of Business Brunel University 2005, Business
Person of the Year 2004, Entrepreneur of the Year 2003 & 2004,
Asian of the Year 2002, Deputy Lieutenant Greater London 2001,
Chancellor Thames Valley University 2005, and many more awards and appointments.
BIBA Best
Oriental Restaurant went for a second time to the fabulous Kai in
Mayfair and top Italian was declared to be Caldesi W1. The BIBA
Newcomer of the Year in the Asian sector produced the most startling
competition with top Indian singer Asha Bosle's first UK restaurant
Asha's in Birmingham winning from no less than 17 shortlisted
finalists when just 4 or 5 have been the norm each year.
Award winners
will be invited to a special Bollywood or Ballgowns Grand Charity
event in London in aid of Oxfam to close National Curry Week on 27th
October where there will be a "Celebration of Achievement".
