"660 CURRIES" by Raghavan Iyer Published by Workman ISBN 978-0-7611-3787-0 £14.99

Described as "nothing short of a treasure chest" by Madhur Jaffrey, this massive 800 page plus tome is well produced and laid out and is produced as the result of the input of people in villages throughout South East Asia. The author is the IACP award-winning Cooking Teacher of the Year 2004 and author of 'Betty Crocker's Indian Home Cooking and The Turmeric Trail'. He teaches, cooks, writes and lives in Minnesota and that produces the one annoyance with the book. Some of the dish names are understandably very American and always with use 'canola oil'. Also the author feels that "in England(not UK!) and the rest of the world, "curry" describes anything Indian that is mottled with hot spices, with or without a sauce, and curry powder is the blend that delivers it". I feel a lot of Indian chefs in UK with feel rather offended at this - and this after saying the word curry is scarcely known in India. Full marks for quantity but in UK terms it irritates somewhat.
