For over
200 years Clerkenwell has been London's Little Italy and each year
since the 1880s a traditional Italian procession and festival are
held right outside the front door of the acclaimed gastro-pub, The
Coach & Horses.
The
procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a genuine traditional
Italian festival, the likes of which are rarely found outside of
Italy and this year it will take place on Sunday July 20th. So, from
July 14th-27th inclusive The Coach & Horses will be celebrating
la bella cucina italiana with an Italian-style menu created by Head
Chef, Nick Leonard, set to include some classics, regional
specialities and a few contemporary twists. There will be a special
Italian wine-tasting and food pairing on 16th July from 7pm for one
and a half hours for anyone wanting a taste of dolcetto as well as la
dolce vita. Tickets for the wine tasting cost £10 each.
The annual
festival is a brilliant day out for families and quirky enough to
keep adults entertained too. The Coach & Horses will host a
special Italian inspired Sunday lunch on the day of the festival
which is going to be a full-blown Italian feast. The Italian inspired
menu may include a simple insalata caprese or pasta al pesto, or a
more extravagant polenta with field mushrooms & gorgonzola or
confit of lamb shoulder with aubergine caponata. The new-style Coach
& Horses lunch menu offers the perfect opportunity to try small
plates of all the dishes at bargain prices: small plates are
available from just £4 each, 3 for £10 or 2 plates plus a
soft drink, pint or glass of wine for £10. A selection of main
courses is also available from £8.
The Coach
& Horses, a stunning Victorian pub (est. circa 1855), re-opened
in 2003 to become an award-winning gastro-pub serving excellent food
and wine. Ingredient sourcing is key to The Coach and Horses; they
place huge emphasis on seasonal food and quality produce. With an
outside terrace area, the family-run Coach & Horses is also
perfect for al fresco summer dining. The Coach & Horses has both
family and Italian ties with 3 of its previous landlords being in the
same Italian family.
