A
New Star In The Firmament
As with all
new vintage cuvées of Champagne Gosset, Grand Millesime 1999
is a complex blend of the very best of the harvest. The harvest in
1999 was not only the last of the 20th Century, but according to
Gosset, one of the best. "It was a year when we not only
witnessed a total eclipse of the sun, but also a new vintage which is
likely to be one of our stars." Says Beatrice Cointreau, CEO of
Champagne Gosset.
Each vintage
of Champagne Gosset reveals a unique complexity. As reflects such a
rare cuvée, Grand Millesime 1999 is blended from only the
finest crus and carefully aged in the unique style of Champagne
Gosset, the oldest wine house in Champagne, Aÿ 1584. According
to cellar master Jean-Pierre Mareigner, Grand Millésime 1999
is a superb example of 'terroir' authenticity from the most
prestigious grand cru vineyards, and of the Gosset style itself.
Composed of
56% Chardonnay 'premier and grand crus' and 44% pinot noir 'premier
and grand crus', this Grand Millesime offers an "elegant but
rich and racy personality" The appearance is crystalline and
bright, with a light yellow hue, with hints of green gold and an
abundance of fine bubbles. On the nose it is reminiscent of fresh
apricots, pears and quince, with floral traces of jasmine and white
lilac. There is also a trace of citrus and honey. On tasting, the
pinot noir releases a rush of fruit flavour backed by a rounded,
lush, velvety structure with attractive but discreet hints of sweet
almond and wild sloes liqueurs. There is a delicate final flavour,
which is dominated by a zest of lemon freshness. Any champagne of
this pedigree is perfect with food and can be enjoyed throughout an
entire meal. Ready for drinking, it is a marvellous match for modern,
traditional or regional French or Asian cuisine.
