Kingfisher
Curry Capital of Britain 2006
|
The battle
for the titles of Curry Capital of Britain 2006 and EthniCity 2006,
both sponsored by Kingfisher Indian lager, moved into the judging
phase as teams were announced to represent each city.
"Voting
was particularly keen this year," said organiser Peter Grove of
Menu Magazine. "The sheer numbers indicate the tremendous
loyalty generated to customers by ethnic restaurants."
Votes are
accepted via the magazine and associated websites as well as directly
from the restaurants and there is traditionally great support from
regional media. This year the entire Leicester team was chosen by
readers of the Leicester Mercury but it was left to a Glasgow
restaurant to be the top vote winner. Panjea, in Charing Cross
Glasgow received over 1000 votes from its customers to put it at the
head of the Glasgow team of four.
The team
restaurants will now be visited by the 13 independent judges whilst
each city council prepares a submission supporting the title bids. In
the meantime the public can continue voting for the favourite city on
www.ethnicityshowcase.com. Final date for council submissions is
April 22 and city voting closes on the same day.
The winners of
the two titles will be announced on 12 May after due deliberation by
the judges.
Many cities
try to claim the title of 'curry capital' for themselves but this
event remains the only official, independently voted-for 'Curry
Capital' and 'EthniCity' title in Britain and competition is,
understandably, fierce.
