Last Days Gives Children A Real Taste Of India

Multi award winning restaurant, the Last Days of the Raj, was host to over 60 pupils and the Mayor of Gateshead, to help bring a lesson in Indian culture to life. Restaurant owner, Arthur Khan and his team of chefs and waiters gave the Oakfield primary School pupils a real taste of India, and helped them to complete a project on Asian life and culture. As they tucked into authentic Indian cuisine, the children were given the opportunity to ask the staff questions about their history and culture, followed by an official address by the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Joe Mitchinson.

Arthur Khan said, "Cultures in society are becoming increasingly diverse and I feel it is important that children have an understanding of what these are. By inviting the children to my restaurant, they can experience this first hand, from tasting food to finding out about our everyday lives"

Councillor Joe Mitchinson continued, "I think it is great that children have been given the opportunity to visit the Last Days of the Raj restaurant. It's somewhere that is on their doorstep, yet can give an insight into the diverse make-up of our community. Projects like this go a long way to educating pupils and broadening their knowledge of society".
