bamboo flutes and has worked with people such as George Fenton, Peter
Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor as well as featuring on the soundtracks

His love of
food comes from his upbringing and memories of his childhood and in
every description he evokes the colours, smells, tastes and sounds of
a world in China that no longer exists. The book is simply yet
beautifully written and the appreciation of every little thing in his
childhood because his family had so little, shines through. He is
also like that with his food - simply and appreciative using the
simplest of ingredients to achieve perfect harmony of taste, colour
and texture.
The first part
of the book takes the reader through the writer's early life in Mao's
revolutionary China, remembering people, places and happenings with
remarkable clarity. The recipes represent the second part of the book
and reflect Guo Yue's passion for food which was one of the few
things that could be openly discussed in Mao's China. He now lives in
Richmond just outside London with his co-writer wife Clare Farrow and
their two children. The book is completely fascinating and the
recipes very useable.
