Competition
Hots Up Amongst Fashion Students
Simon Jersey, the
UK's leading corporate and workwear specialist has completed the
first stage of judging for its student fashion competition. It
challenged fashion students across the country to design a collection
for the bar and café industry.
Simon Jersey received
100 fresh, high calibre entries from budding designers across the UK
and from this has short-listed eight entries. |
This was the first time
a corporate clothing business has linked up with fashion schools, and
it proved to be a big success, with students from several different
universities taking part.
For the first stage of
the competition, students were asked to submit designs which were
fashionable and stylish, but also fit for purpose - able to survive
the rigours of working in a bar or restaurant. Mood boards had to
include the inspiration for the garments, colour palettes and fabric
swatches.
Judging took place
earlier last month. The panel of judges represented a fantastic cross-section
of knowledge of the fashion industry, including Rory Turner, Fashion
and Fashion Promotion Lecturer from the University of Central
Lancashire, Simon Moyle, founder of Simon Jersey and Helen Harker,
Head of Design for Simon Jersey.

Emerging themes within
the designs included cropped trousers and pencil skirts, with
feminine fitted tops, and funky aprons and money belts. |
 |
Capped sleeves,
cross-over tops and high waisted trousers also featured, and colours
tended to focus on black or grey with a strong accent colour: red,
purple and white.
Helen Harker comments on
the entries: "The entries were of a very high standard and the
panel certainly had their work cut out to whittle them down to the
final eight.
I think these finalists
best captured the essence of Simon Jersey and our desire to produce
stylish yet functional uniform solutions for people to work in."
The short-listed
students will now submit a mock-up of their design for the final,
which will be judged in April. The lucky winner will see their design
featured in Simon Jersey's September 2006 catalogue and well as
receiving £1,000 cash, and a work placement opportunity with
Helen Harker and the design team.
