Staffing
has long been a problem in the restaurant industry in UK but never as
much as it is today, especially in the ethnic sector. The expansion
of the EEC last year to make the British labour market available to
all member countries including the new eastern bloc has had
considerable effect.
Much of the
economic health of the Indian and Chinese sectors has been the
employment of extended family and staff from the sub-continent or
China and the enlargement of the EU has greatly threatened that.
After a period of considerable confusion where many restaurants were
finding it impossible to get any but the most skilled staff from
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, the UK Government has introduced a
new scheme.
