Forget the
traditional pint of beer; British men are following in the footsteps
of their Mediterranean counterparts to become a nation of wine
connoisseurs!
Traditionally
seen by many as a drink for the ladies, new research from YouGov on
behalf of Australian wine brand Rosemount shows that times are
changing with more UK men than women enjoying a glass - 79% of UK men
compared to 76% of women say they enjoy the tipple.
When it comes
to their grasp of the grape, the UK's men know their Shiraz from
their Chardonnay and are becoming a nation of wine buffs with a
thirst for knowledge, leaving their female counterparts behind.
But
are we a nation of wine bluffers?
o Nearly a
quarter of men (22%) have pretended to know more about wine than they
actually do to impress someone
o While only
11% of women have stretched the truth
o Those aged
18 - 29 are the biggest bluffers with 27% admitting to bluffing their
way to impress a date or their friends
o Nearly half
(48%) of people aged 18 - 29 say they don't know a lot about wine
Wine
buffs&ldots;
o While 31% of
people feel they know enough about wine, 33% of men are keen to
improve their knowledge, compared with only 24% of women
o 29% of men
read the wine columns in the weekend papers and 18% have read a book
on wine
o 26% of men
and 22% of women have been to a wine tasting event
o 35% of
people have visited a vineyard abroad - 39% of men versus 32% of
women
Restaurant
etiquette
When it comes
to selecting wine in a restaurant, over a third of men (35%) want to
choose the wine themselves as they don't trust their partner's choice!
o 11% of us
try the wine because we think it is polite to do so
o Just under a
third (31%) of people are put off by extensive wine lists in restaurants
o 55% women
say they share the decision of which wine to drink with their
partner, but only 45% of men feel the same!
o 25% of
people feel uncomfortable about tasting the wine when the bottle is
first brought to the table
o A quarter of
women (24%) do not think they would be able to taste if a wine was
'corked' compared with only 16% of men
James
Craig-Wood, Rosemount's wine expert comments: "These days men
are increasingly interested in cooking and entertaining at home,
which has led to much wider interest in wine and increased wine
consumption both at home and in restaurants. Our research provides a
valuable insight into the wine habits of the country and proves that
although there is a general interest in wine, people can be put off
by the 'snob' element. We want to make the enjoyment of drinking wine
accessible to everyone".
Rosemount has
put together a useful step-by-step wine guide, including video
footage and a food and wine matching guide, on their website. So
