Number Of Votes Causes Late Announcement

20 APRIL-18 MAY 2007

The announcement of the teams for this year's Curry Capital of Britain competition organised by Menu Magazine, should have gone out to eager councils on Friday 9th March but such was the volume of votes, according to the organisers, that they needed an extra two days to determine the final positions.

2007 will be the 7th year this event has been held and involves major cities all over the country to determine who will hold the title for the coming year and be entitled to call themselves Britain's official Curry Capital. The idea is to advertise the good news contributions of the ethnic communities in British cities via a selected team of restaurants to represent each city supported by a submission from each council.

New for 2007 is the inclusion in restaurant choice of all restaurants offering curry on the menu so Thai, Caribbean and some Chinese were also open for selection. Each city will be represented by a team of five restaurants rather than the previous four and these have been voted for by the public.

"The efforts of the restaurants has been simply amazing this year," said organiser Peter Grove. "Several restaurants received nearly 1000 votes each, and with 90 restaurants to be decided upon, the counting exercise became quite an operation."

Glasgow won the title last year and are already making a bold showing in the early stages of this year's event but other past winners such as Birmingham and Bradford are determined that Glasgow should not win for a fourth time and Manchester, Leicester and London East, always close contenders, are tipped, by some, as dark horses.

"We have been particularly impressed by the standard of restaurant voted for this year," continued Grove. "Many of the cities have had some exciting new establishments in the past year and the judges have certainly got their work cut out for them as never before."

Councils will be making their submissions by 20th April and the judges will announce the results on 21st May in what promises to be the closest event ever. The judges will visit the chosen city teams throughout April and May during which period each restaurant is asked to have a special evening to raise money for Oxfam.
