King Charan Gill, MBE was recently(13.03.07) presented with a
Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Irn-Bru Curry Awards at a
glittery ceremony at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel attended by such
celebrities and public figures as Shereen Nanjiani, Carol Smillie,
John Smeaton and the Lord and Lady Provost of Glasgow.
Said Charan, "I'm
absolutely delighted to be presented with this award - particularly
as there's no better way to wash down a spicey chicken tikka than
with an Irn-Bru - after all, a good curry and an Irn-Bru are both
staples of the Glaswegian diet!"
Former shipbuilder Charan Gill
founded his Harlequin Leisure Group in Glasgow in 1994 and built it
into Europe's largest chain of Indian restaurants before selling it
in a multi-million pound deal in 2005. His next move was to pen his
autobiography, 'Tikka Look at me Now', star in the hit Channel 4 TV
series The Secret Millionaire and to open Scotland House in Delhi.
Last year Charan acquired The Quay Complex in Musselburgh and only
last month became non-executive director of Noah Beers in Glasgow.
Charan is also renowned for his
many charitable works. For the past nine years he has hosted The
Hottest Night of the Year, the legendary annual celebration of all
that's best in the worlds of showbiz, sport, politics and business in
Glasgow which last year raised over £150,000 for The Prince and
Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow and Help the Aged, India.
Also last year Charan, together
with some of Scotland's best known entrepreneur/ philanthropists
raised over £40,000 to establish Scotia Farm, a small water
buffalo dairy farm in a remote village of the Punjab, in India to
provide free milk to 400 needy families every day.
This recognition was the latest
in a string of awards with which Charan has been presented in a long
and glittering career, including an Honorary Doctorate from the
University of Paisley and Asian Entrepreneur of the Year.
