Another Award For Curry King

'Curry King', Charan Gill

Curry King Charan Gill, MBE was recently(13.03.07) presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Irn-Bru Curry Awards at a glittery ceremony at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel attended by such celebrities and public figures as Shereen Nanjiani, Carol Smillie, John Smeaton and the Lord and Lady Provost of Glasgow.

Said Charan, "I'm absolutely delighted to be presented with this award - particularly as there's no better way to wash down a spicey chicken tikka than with an Irn-Bru - after all, a good curry and an Irn-Bru are both staples of the Glaswegian diet!"

Former shipbuilder Charan Gill founded his Harlequin Leisure Group in Glasgow in 1994 and built it into Europe's largest chain of Indian restaurants before selling it in a multi-million pound deal in 2005. His next move was to pen his autobiography, 'Tikka Look at me Now', star in the hit Channel 4 TV series The Secret Millionaire and to open Scotland House in Delhi. Last year Charan acquired The Quay Complex in Musselburgh and only last month became non-executive director of Noah Beers in Glasgow.

Charan is also renowned for his many charitable works. For the past nine years he has hosted The Hottest Night of the Year, the legendary annual celebration of all that's best in the worlds of showbiz, sport, politics and business in Glasgow which last year raised over £150,000 for The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow and Help the Aged, India.

Also last year Charan, together with some of Scotland's best known entrepreneur/ philanthropists raised over £40,000 to establish Scotia Farm, a small water buffalo dairy farm in a remote village of the Punjab, in India to provide free milk to 400 needy families every day.

This recognition was the latest in a string of awards with which Charan has been presented in a long and glittering career, including an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Paisley and Asian Entrepreneur of the Year.
