TASTE OF RAJASTHAN FOR MOTHER'S DAY

Mother's Day represented an all too rare opportunity for restaurants throughout Britain to gain some welcome extra income on a day when receipts are normally quite low.

With Beefeaters, Harvesters and other similar outlets packed to the rafters with thousands of special occasion diners, we decided to try out the very interested Rajasthan Festival featured in the last issue at Sesame in New Malden just outside London. Sesame's virtuoso Chef is a specialist at Rajasthani fayre and although the restaurant has only been open for just over a year, it is already gaining a reputation for being something rather special in the food department.

With the whole family on board we decided to test both the Rajasthan Festival menu and the normal a la carte. I went for Methi Salmon Tikka to start with followed by the famous Rajasthani dish, Lal Maas. The salmon was so tasty that most of my food was stolen by others sitting at the table and the Lal Maas deserves some special praise. I have tried this wonderful dish in many restaurants and the results can often be disappointing. Not so at Sesame. The dish was beautifully spiced with a sauce of just the right consistency and was without doubt one of the best examples of this dish I have ever had.

Star of the day - MUM - went for her favourite Methi Murg and fish, dal and prawn dishes added to the tempting array.

This was the first time we had ever celebrated Mother's Day at an Indian restaurant and we were left wondering why. As with our previous visits to Sesame, situtated between Kingston upon Thames and New Malden, we were all very impressed with the total dining package and as the Rajasthan Festival is continuing into April, I recommend getting along there to try that Lal Maas for yourself.
