City
Councils Pull Out All The Stops
With the
full report still to be compiled it looks as though this years Curry
Capital of Britain and EthniCity competitions have been the most
exciting yet. |
Now in their
sixth year, the titles, sponsored by Kingfisher Premium Lager and the
subject of intense competition between 16 cities in Britain involving
a team of restaurants chosen by the public and a submission from the
city council, were decided today by the thirteen independent judges.
"This
year the councils have pulled out all the stops" commented
organiser Peter Grove, editor of Menu Magazine. "Compared with
the early years they represented an embarrassment of riches and
indicate just how important city councils feel the input of the
ethnic community is".
The Curry
Capital of Britain for 2006 is Glasgow who now become the holder for
an amazing third time. "The judges were knocked out by the
fantastic council presentation," Grove commented, "and the
restaurants really pitched in raising over £1300 for the charity
Action Against Hunger.
Second was
Manchester who took the event really seriously this year and
indicated some strong competition for future years with Bradford in
third on a vote recount. Last year's winner Birmingham was close up
fourth, Leicester fifth, London South sixth and Edinburgh seventh.
The EthniCity
2006 title goes to Bradford who really emphasised their multicultural
background with Manchester a very close second and looking
challenging for 2007. Third was Glasgow who won the title last year
with another wonderful presentation, fourth Birmingham and fifth
Leicester.
"The
enthusiasm showed by the cities was the best yet," continued
Grove. "Leicester Mercury really whipped up enthusiasm in
Leicester and Birmingham and Bradford were as professional as ever
and very active in support of their bids". "The Glasgow bid
was just exceptional and was described by the judges as 'stunning' so
the Curry Capital trophy is heading north of the border yet again."
